Preparing for National Assisted Living Admin Licensing Exam – GMU Course

The George Mason University Program in Assisted Living/Senior Housing Administration will be offering the core course of its graduate curricula during the Spring 2008 academic semester.

HAP 650 “Assisted Living/Senior Housing Management & Operations” provides an overview of the assisted living/senior housing industry, followed by detailed instruction and review of all operational, financial, human resource, marketing, resident care, hospitality and support functions applicable to the day-to-day management of assisted living, Alzheimer’s, or continuing care retirement communities. THE COURSE WILL ADDITIONALLY COVER THE DOMAINS OF PRACTICE INFORMATION THE NATIONAL ASSISTED LIVING ADMINISTRATOR’S LICENSING EXAM – WHICH WILL BE REQUIRED FOR ALL VIRGINIA ASSISTED LIVING ADMINISTRATORS, EFFECTIVE JANUARY 2009.

The course will be offered on the Fairfax campus of George Mason University on Wednesday evenings from 4:30 – 7:20 PM, beginning January 23, 2008 and continuing through May 14, 2008. A sample syllabus for HAP 650 can be found at:

This course can be completed as a single offering by any individual with a previous bachelor’s degree or higher, who applies and is admitted for Non-degree graduate study through the University. Information and application for Non-degree graduate study can be found at:

The course can also be completed as part of either a 15-18 credit hour Graduate Certificate in Assisted Living/Senior Housing Administration, or a 39-42 credit hour Master’s in Health Administration & Policy, with a Concentration in Assisted Living/Senior Housing Administration. Both the Graduate Certificate and Master’s additionally include a 320-hour Internship intended to meet the Administrator-in-Training (AIT) requirement for licensing of NEW assisted living administrator’s in Virginia, also effective January 2009. STUDENTS WISHING TO ENROLL IN HAP 650 OR RELATED ASSISTED LIVING/SENIOR HOUSING COURSE WORK DURING THE SPRING 2008 SEMESTER SHOULD COMPLETE ONLINE APPLICATION FOR STUDY NO LATER THAN DECEMBER 1, 2007, TO ENSURE TIME TO REGISTER FOR SPRING SEMESTER COURSES.
