Please help Maryland – Medicaid Funding

Thank you to all who have made phone calls urging the General Assembly not to cut (ie., “level fund”) Medicaid providers. However, phone calls MUST continue. Now that both chambers have passed the tax package, focus is on reducing the growth in the budget through cuts. It only takes a few minutes to make a phone call.

As already reported, long-term care providers (nursing homes, medical adult day and Medicaid waiver providers) would receive “level-funding” under these options. Updated projections show a cost savings to the State of $28 million. This cut will be exacerbated because of the loss of federal funds and would be in actuality a cut of $56 million total funds, the largest reduction every taken. LifeSpan testified in opposition and explained that providers would not be “level-funded” but would actually experience a cut due to increasing costs to provide care.

It is very important to let your legislators and members of the House Appropriations and Senate Budget and Taxation Committee know that the DLS recommendation is a CUT and not “level-funding” or a slowdown in growth. Ask them to OPPOSE any such options and that it is unfair and irresponsible to cut Medicaid for current enrollees while expanding coverage for a new population (ie., “working poor”).

THESE CALLS NEED TO BE MADE ASAP. Legislators need to hear from you — their constituents on what this option would mean to your ability to deliver quality care. You can access your legislators at http://www.lifespan-network.org/advocacy.asp. Phone numbers for the budget committees are listed below. Health subcommittee members have a star and should be contacted first. MAKE THE CALL TODAY!!!
