People on the Move – Homecrest House Staff Named HUMANITARIAN OF THE YEAR

At the Annual Conference of the Association of Jewish Aging Services (AJAS) this past week in Atlanta, Doris Torti, Activities Director at B’nai B’rith HOMECREST HOUSE, was presented with the association’s HUMANITARIAN OF THE YEAR AWARD for 2010.  Founded in 1960, AJAS is the central coordinator for homes and residential facilities for Jewish elderly in North America.

For the past twelve years, Doris Torti has been the Activities Director at B’nai B’rith Homecrest House.  In this role, Torti has been responsible for planning and executing activities for Homecrest’s almost 300 senior residents.  Torti ensures the monthly calendar of activities is full, giving much of her personal time to being a part of the many programs that include the annual fall “Jamboree,” monthly “teas” for residents to proudly show off their collectibles, the annual summer “Tropical Fiesta,” weekly “adventure” trips for residents on the Homecrest House van and much, much more.

When B’nai B’rith Homecrest House was awarded a first ever grant from the Jim and Carol Trawick Foundation to provide monthly concerts for residents, Torti wove them into a Homecrest schedule that was outstanding.  The 2009 “Trawick Concert Series” included performances by members of the Baltimore Symphony, opera, jazz, musicals with song and dance, Russian and Irish music, Cantors and more.  Wrote a resident of the programs at Homecrest House, “Very professionally done.  Lifted my spirits after several bad days.  Thank you for the gift.”

And…Torti does not forget the staff at Homecrest House.  Annually she also plans and coordinates the annual staff picnic and game day and staff holiday trips to places such as Harpers Ferry, the Kennedy Center and this past year, to the Inner-Harbor in Baltimore.

A graduate of Indiana University, Torti came to Maryland in 1979.  Prior to coming to B’nai B’rith Homecrest House Ms. Torti worked for Montgomery County Senior Programs for seven years.

Said B’nai B’rith Homecrest House Executive Director Joe Podson, “All of us in the profession of serving seniors are extremely proud of Doris Torti and all she has done and is doing.  She represents the best of the best.  We are very, very fortunate to have her with us here at B’nai B’rith Homecrest House.  Thank you Doris!”
