National Long-Term Care Study Key Findings

The 2010 MetLife Market Survey of Nursing Home, Assisted Living, Adult Day Services, and Home Care Costs

This survey provides national, statewide, and, in certain states (based on population), area-specific costs, average private-pay, daily rates for private and semi-private rooms in a nursing home, monthly base rates in assisted living communities, hourly rates for home health aide and homemaker services, and daily rates for adult day services.

Some Key Findings:
Nursing Homes – National average rates for a private room increased by 4.6%, from $219 daily or $79,935 annually in 2009, to $229 daily or $83,585 annually in 2010. National average rates for a semi-private room increased by 3.5%, from $198 daily or $72,270 annually in 2009 to $205 daily or $74,825 annually in 2010.

Assisted Living – National average assisted living base rates increased by 5.2%, from $3,131 monthly or $37,572 annually in 2009, to $3,293 monthly
or $39,516 annually in 2010.

Home Care – The 2010 national average private-pay hourly rates for home health aides and homemaker/companion services remain unchanged from 2009 at $21 and $19 respectively.

Adult Day Care – Private-pay daily rates were obtained for adult day services. Adult day services national average daily rates remain unchanged from 2009 at $67.
