Gaithersburg Senior Community Hits a Snag

IDI Group Cos. has backed out of a project to build a senior community on 135 acres in Gaithersburg known as the Webb Tract. But the owner of the property said it will go ahead with the development.

The project was announced in May with support from area residents. Many of them had opposed a previous plan by some Montgomery County officials to put a service park, with a school-bus depot and a county liquor warehouse, on the Snouffers School Road site.

Last week, IDI, an Arlington developer, issued a statement saying it had dropped its plan to build on the site because “development related issues could not be resolved with the owner of the property,” Miller and Smith Homes Inc. of McLean. IDI said it was unable to get an extension of the deadline for a feasibility study to resolve the issues. A spokeswoman for the company said IDI could not provide more details because of a confidentiality agreement with the landowner
