CO-SPONSORED BY THE NATIONAL ASSOCIATION OF SOCIAL WORKERS —MARYLAND CHAPTER– The Can’t, Don’t, and Won’t of Swallowing: A Primer on Feeding, Dietary Changes, and Food Preparation to Improve Intake and Quality of Life:

Presenters Susan I. Wranik, speech-language pathologist, and Nikki Haddad, personal chef.

This program will increase social workers’ awareness and un-derstanding of swallowing issues that affect seniors and knowledge of appropriate resources to address them. It will provide an anatomical and physiological overview of swallow-ing and when physiological and cognitive issues present a challenge to the normal swallowing process. It will provide par-ticipants with an understanding of dysphagia, its diagnosis, and its treatment to include the role of dietary changes. Partic-ipants will have the opportunity to see and handle foods pre-pared with dysphagia in mind, focusing on maintaining presen-tation and quality of life. The program will also strive to expose common misunderstandings in addressing dysphagia and best practices.
