It all started with a phone call. Ivor and Jean Jones had been living in an assisted living community in Baltimore, Md., for several years when one of their sons, Dr. Bruce Jones, received an unexpected call from their neighbor. “The neighbor had seen their condo listed in the paper as not having paid taxes. It was scheduled for tax sale,” Bruce recalled.

Bruce was shocked, but he soon realized that his father had not been managing any of the couple’s finances. “We discovered that my dad hadn’t been paying my mother’s Medicare premiums since May 2010, and the medical bills were piling up,” Bruce said.

The Jones family no longer has to worry about sorting paperwork or paying bills. Pictured are fro left to right: Ivor, Tanya, Bruce and Jean Jones.

When Bruce’s wife, Tanya, read about InfoDoc, a company that offers estate organizing services, she knew they could help. “Mary Helen [with InfoDoc] has been a godsend,” said Bruce. “You read about this stuff and you think it wouldn’t be so difficult to handle, but it’s so much harder when you are actually trying to do it yourself.”

Although Medicare originally told Bruce and his mother they only needed to pay $300 and coverage would be reinstated, the check was never cashed and the family could not get any answers. When InfoDoc stepped in to help, they contacted Congressman John Sarbanes’ office, and his staff helped the family get Medicare re-instated; however, coverage would not start until July 2012.

Since this still left the family liable for old medical bills, InfoDoc continued to pursue complete coverage. Mary Helen reached out to Senator Benjamin Cardin’s office, and they ultimately helped get coverage re-instated and retroactive back to May 2010. Remarkably, Jean’s coverage was reinstated on a Friday and that Sunday she fell and broke her hip and had to have a hip replacement.

“Getting Medicare reinstated took a tremendous amount of effort on her part– letter writing and countless phone calls –and it saved us tens of thousands of dollars,” Bruce said. “Her services really have more than paid for themselves.”

In addition to helping the Jones family get Medicare reinstated, InfoDoc organized their files and helped to eliminate bogus charges coming out of the checking account. They are also working to get the medical facilities and doctors who were paid by the family to resubmit Medicare claims and reimburse the family.

“This kind of work takes a lot of attention to detail and a lot of creativity as well,” Bruce concluded. With a very demanding schedule of his own, Bruce is grateful that he can now spend his free time with his family– instead of reviewing, analyzing and paying bills.

“My family was there watching and I told my father, ‘I want to be the first woman to do that,’” she said.

Although Amelia Earhart ultimately paved the way for female pilots as the first woman to cross the Atlantic, Barbara never strayed from accomplishing her lifetime goals. Today, she happily shares her stories and memorabilia with the friends she has made at Paul Spring Retirement Community located in Alexandria, Va.

After spending her early childhood in Detroit, Barbara primarily grew up in Chicago, Ill. and eventually attended college in Minnesota. It was there she met Jim, her future husband.

The road to getting married was not an easy one for the two. Jim had been drafted the summer before the war and was only supposed to be gone a year, but his plans were halted by the attack on Pearl Harbor. Barbara was also still in school, but when Jim had gone to Officer Candidate School and could afford to be married, she talked to her professors on how to finish her credits. It was during his first leave as an officer when the two finally wed.

Meanwhile Barbara had been taking flying courses through college before the war. Having earned her wings, she tried to pursue her dream after the war, but was not accepted because she was a married woman. “I’ve never outgrown the dislike for that,” she said.

As a result, she started to rent planes, despite the expenses, until the couple had their three children. While she took them out flying on occasion, the family moved a great deal across the country through Jim’s job and eventually ended up living in Washington, D.C.

Following his retirement, the couple decided to travel to different parts of the world. “We went in the Peace Corps for two years and were in the Philippines which was wonderful,” said Barbara. “We worked for the Farmer’s Core and learned the Ilocano language.”

With their home at the time located in Lynchburg, Va., the couple knew they wanted to make a transition and live near one of their sons in the D.C. Metro area. In 2003, they researched different senior housing options, and knew Paul Spring was the best place for them to settle for their future years.

“It was small and private and that is what we wanted,” said Barbara.

The Williams immediately found a sense of camaraderie at the community, especially Jim, despite his declining health. “He would go downstairs to dinner and he would just sit in the chair and people would talk to him,” said Barbara. “Everyone liked him, it was amazing.”

The couple had spent over two years at Paul Spring before Jim passed away. “People here were very kind,” she said. “I couldn’t tell you how many people would meet me in the hall and just give me a hug.”

In addition to the support system she found at the community, she has taken advantage of the numerous activities and amenities Paul Spring has to offer. From Wii bowling and yoga to weekly movie nights and socials, there is always something going on for Barbara and her peers. Among her favorite activities, however, is Bingo. “It’s fun because anyone can pick it up in a hurry and you get to know people,” she said.

Aside from the many friends she has made while participating in activities and socializing at dinner, Barbara said it is also the staff that highly contributes to the community’s welcoming and caring atmosphere. “The help here is wonderful and the staff just makes it a warm environment,” she said.

This help ranges in a variety of services such as housekeeping, laundry, transportation, daily meal plans, emergency call systems and professional management and maintenance services. Those in assisted living receive personal care services from assistance with activities of daily living to being escorted to and from meals and in-house activities. Although Paul Spring offers residential and assisted living, individuals also have the unique option of customizing their daily care, including nursing assistance, based on their particular needs.

With the peace of mind knowing healthcare and an accommodating staff are available, Barbara, who is also the secretary of the Resident Council, continues to enjoy the luxuries of her home that is conveniently located to the offerings of Old Town Alexandria. No matter where the day takes her, however, she loves coming back to her apartment which is adorned with documents detailing her flying days as one of ‘Macalester’s Ladybirds.’

Especially important to her are the newspaper clippings Jim had framed for her one Christmas. “He was one of the first I took up in the air when we were still in college. He always accepted it,” she said.

Today, she can happily say that she has found a similar sense of support and a feeling of family at Paul Spring, a place she has proudly recommended to other friends considering a transition in their lives.

“The people here are just friendly,” she said. “You smile, and they smile back.”

SourceBook publisher, Steve Gurney conducted the interview with Barbara Williams in her apartment at Paul Spring. Steve has very close ties to Paul Spring and its residents. The community was the first stop on his journey to better understand the transition that the readers of the publication he founded make. At age 43, Steve lived as a resident and documented his insights and thoughts at www.everyoneisaging.com. He says, “Although I had visited over 500 senior communities in my 20-year career when I moved to Paul Spring, I realized how much I had missed by not trying to experience these settings through the eyes of the residence. These communities are the best neighborhoods I have ever lived in, where neighbors truly care about and care for each other.”

From Machu Picchu to Thailand, well-rounded travelers Marilyn and Bob Ackelsberg have enjoyed interacting with different cultures and taking in the beautiful sights of the many places they have visited over the years. Therefore when it came time to find a living option for their future, the place they chose would have some unique experiences to follow. When they discovered Cathedral Village in Philadelphia, however, they found a vibrant continuing care community nestled in 44 acres that would not only offer them a suburban-style setting with scenic views, but convenience to the cultural offerings of the city.

Both born in the Bronx, Marilyn and Bob became friends in their early teens. After attending City College for his undergraduate studies, Bob received his Masters in Chemical Engineering at Columbia University. He also received a MBA from NYU, where Marilyn had gone for her undergraduate studies.

Having worked in the plastics industry and subsequently as a consultant, Bob decided to take a different career route and started teaching. He enrolled in a PhD business program at CUNY and started to teach at St. Peter’s College in Jersey City. Meanwhile, Marilyn stayed at home with their three sons and then she too went back to school to get her teaching certification.

With summers off, the couple bought a trailer and made two cross-country trips. “We went all over the country and into Canada,” said Bob. “The first time we went 13,000 miles and the second, we did 10,000.”

One of Marilyn’s favorite memories from these trips was when they went camping in Idaho, after seeing white water rafters on a cover of National Geographic. “It just looked so exciting,” she said. “So we got in touch with a guide and arranged for a side camping trip, spending five nights in the middle fork of the Salmon River with about 25 people and several rafts.”

When Bob finally received his Doctorate he accepted a position in the School of Business at Shippensburg University. When the couple moved to Shippensburg, Marilyn received her Masters Degree in Reading and worked as a reading specialist. Bob received a federal grant to initiate an international business program that included Asian languages and international business courses. Over the years, sabbaticals and presentations at conferences took them to Europe for extended visits.

The couple felt very fortunate when Bob taught at Prince of Songkla University in Southern Thailand. While he was teaching MBA students, Marilyn taught Conversational English to the faculty and staff as well as the local tourist police. “We were lucky to be asked back for a second time,” she said.

Due to business trips and their summers off from teaching, the couple has also enjoyed visits to Malaysia, China and to different parts of South America and Europe.
As much as they traveled, however, they loved returning home to Pennsylvania. “Our 21 years in a pastoral setting were truly a blessing. Country folk and Amish neighbors helped make it so,” said Marilyn.

As time passed, the Ackelsbergs moved to an active adult community where they lived for 12 years. Although their eldest son kept bringing up the idea of moving to Philadelphia to be near his family, the couple was happy with their lifestyle. That quickly changed, however, when he sent them an ad for Cathedral Village.
Two days later they were there visiting. Their decision to officially move to the community happened quickly.

“Sitting in the beautiful lobby, surrounded by plants, art, lovely flowers, and being greeted by so many friendly people, we felt that Cathedral Village would be the place even before we toured,” said Bob. “It was a very welcoming environment, very warm, just like home.”

Although they committed to visiting other communities, there was no doubt in their minds where they would ultimately spend their future. Now, after nearly a year at Cathedral Village, the Ackelsbergs could not be happier with their choice.

“It’s an atmosphere that’s so alive,” said Marilyn. “I’m now around people my age more than before and it’s more stimulating than when I was in an ordinary community!”

In fact, the couple loves taking advantage of Cathedral Village’s “College Classes,” fitness center and elaborate library while Marilyn participates in painting classes. They both sing with the Village Chorus, and are members of several resident committees. They also enjoy onsite musical performances, parties and lectures along with provided daytrips to theaters and museums in Philadelphia. Most importantly, they have the flexibility of seeing their family which now includes seven grandchildren and one great-grandchild.

The Ackelsbergs have had no problems getting to know their fellow residents. “It seems like a large group of people, but you really feel like family,” said Bob.

This feeling not only applies to the residents, but to “the staff who are so responsive and supportive and responsible for keeping this place so wonderful,” said Marilyn. “Everyone cares about everyone and it’s a very comfortable place to be.”

The fact that Cathedral Village offers a continuum of care has always been an important aspect for the Ackelsbergs. “The quality of healthcare here is absolutely superb,” said Bob.

With access to skilled nursing and Alzheimer’s care onsite, residents have a sense of security and the convenience of even being able to receive assisted living services in the comforts of their apartments. A fully equipped medical department staffed with professional nurses is available 24/7 to respond to emergencies and for routine checks, as well as onsite primary care physicians five days a week. There are also dozens of specialists, from podiatrists to optometrists, who visit Cathedral Village on a weekly basis. “We can be as active as we want knowing the care is there,” said Marilyn.

Given their passion for maintaining their land over the years, it comes as no surprise that among the couple’s favorite amenities at the community are its lavish gardens and greenhouse, which has a full time horticultural/therapist. The dedication of those who worked in the greenhouse, with the horticulturist, resulted in Cathedral Village winning a prestigious award at this year’s Philadelphia Flower Show.

“There are trees here that are well over a hundred years old and all well cared for,” said Marilyn. “Sometimes when I look out the window, I think I’m at an arboretum, it’s so beautiful. They designed the place so well, it’s extraordinary.”

Although they are no longer traveling, it may be safe to say that with these picture-perfect views, an extended family and a range of amenities and activities, the Ackelsbergs still have the world at their fingertips at Cathedral Village.

Edna Murray was the valedictorian of her high school in Roanoke, Va. and a top female executive at her company. Father Manuel Roman has multiple advanced degrees with a background of academic studies that ranges from medicine to psychology and counseling. Now, these two exceptional individuals are part of a class of interesting residents who call the 48-acre campus of Heartlands Senior Living Village in Ellicott City, Md. home.

Father Manuel Roman

Manuel Roman was born in the U.S. Virgin Islands and came to Baltimore to be a doctor. Halfway through his premed studies at Johns Hopkins University, he started to question if it was the career path for him. He developed an interest in becoming a language professor, so he changed his major to French and minored in German. While in graduate school, he became further perplexed about his future when he was commissioned as a Second Lieutenant in the Army Reserve at Ft. Meade.

At a crossroads between a career in medicine, teaching or the military, he went to see his pastor, who actually later became the Archbishop of Baltimore. When Manuel presented his problem, his pastor asked if he had thought about becoming a priest.

“When I said no, he said add that to the list,” Manuel said with a laugh. He then instructed Manuel to interview a physician, military officer, professor and priest having each explain the pros and cons of their careers. He also instructed him to pray over it to get the answer. Then in January 1950, Manuel came across a publication titled “Questions About Vocations.”

“I read it in one reading and when I finished I wanted to be a parish priest,” he said. This started him on a rewarding path of advanced degrees and assignments in a variety of parishes and schools. His favorite assignment was spending his last 20 years as a pastor at Ascension Catholic Church of Halethorpe. “I loved the challenges that we had there,” he said.

Manuel retired at age 80 and moved to an apartment in Catonsville. When he started having problems with arthritis, he began searching for assisted living options, but found his choices limited by the fact that he was insulin-dependent. Fortunately someone recommended Heartlands Senior Living Village, which provides independent and assisted living as well as rehabilitation services. “When I called here they said, ‘We will take you insulin and all!’” said Manuel.

After living in the Heartlands for over three years he said, “I don’t think I could find a better place than this one, I am not saying this because somebody’s telling me to; I’m saying it from my heart.” He cited the friendly and supportive staff as well as the vast amount of activities and recreational offerings as some of his favorite aspects of the community.

In addition, he thoroughly enjoys the food at Heartlands. He said, “If you don’t like what’s on the regular menu, they have an alternate menu. If you don’t like what’s on the alternate menu, they will do everything they can to please you. This is one excellent feature here that many other places don’t have.”

Edna Murray

The youngest of eight children, Edna was actually the first in her family to graduate from high school. “I graduated at the height of the Depression; the rest of my siblings had to go to work,” she said. After deferring an offer to attend Duke University, she started working at the C & P Telephone Company the day after she graduated.

There, she said she met a young man on loan from the Maryland office, and within six months they were married. “We had a delightful marriage for 61 years,” she said.

In that time, she continued working for C&P and moved to Hampstead, Md., the small country town where her husband was born and raised. They had one child, whom Edna quipped, they “spoiled rotten.” Their family grew over the years with two granddaughters and four great grandchildren.

Edna said she enjoyed every minute of her career at C&P, earning her college degree and becoming one of the first women to rise to the executive level in her company. When she and her husband retired at age 55, they bought a condo in Florida to spend part of the year. Her husband was an avid golfer and they belonged to clubs in both states.

In 1992, the couple was among the first residents to move to Heartlands, which was a brand new independent living retirement community. With Edna’s husband recuperating from a bout with cancer, they figured it would be a smart move and after researching the community, they settled on a cottage with a den and screened-in porch. After her husband fully recovered, they moved back to Hampstead. They agreed, however, if one of them passed away the surviving spouse would return to Heartlands.

When this became a reality for Edna, she lived alone for eight years, but decided it was best to move back to Heartlands. Amazed at how much the community had expanded, she moved into an independent living apartment.

“It’s just a place that has touched me as home,” she said. The homelike atmosphere has meant a great deal to Edna who has since moved to an assisted living apartment due to the progression of vision and health problems.

“That is one of the best features about Heartlands,” says Beth Sanchez, director of Marketing. “We have been part of the Ellicott City culture for over 24 years, and we are ‘home’ to over 250 residents. Our residents and their families enjoy-and rely on-the warmth and care that surround them here. We are proud and honored to serve the seniors in our community.”

And Edna has learned how that warmth and care extends to all facets of the community. Since she now has to pay close attention to her diet due to a pancreas problem, she, like Manuel, enjoys the fact that she has three meals a day and the companionship of her friends at meals.

As a proud member of the Daughters of the American Revolution and the Maryland Federation of Women’s Clubs for six decades, Edna also enjoys the vibrant atmosphere she has found at the Heartlands. With a passion for hobbies, she has access to a range of amenities including the community center that hosts a variety of social functions along with a full-service library and indoor heated pool and spa. She even maintains her outside relationships, particularly assisting her 97-year-old friend who lives in a nearby nursing home.

For others considering a move, Edna offered some sage advice. “I think living at Heartlands is the way to go. When you get here, it’s about how you are going to live your life. There has never been a day I had any sorrow for coming here.”

And coming from either of these individuals, with not only their impressive educational backgrounds, but the choices they made to find a home that has met their individualized needs, these are certainly words of wisdom.

If there is one thing residents at Classic Residence in Chevy Chase, a Vi Community, are not doing, it is sitting still. At Classic Residence, an older adult rental community, vibrant lifestyles flourish, especially in Dick Swartz’s art class. Here, several individuals with varying art backgrounds gather to create different works and form lasting friendships. “This is the best group; they’re so engaged and excited,” said Dick. “Everyone here is doing something different.”

A professional artist, who has led art classes at Classic Residence since 1999, Dick takes pride in sharing his techniques with his class. From designing murals to composing clay sculptures and oil paintings he watches as his students not only benefit from exploring their artistic abilities, but also their growing camaraderie. In fact, during his time teaching he has seen a pair of classmates fall in love, one of whom had Parkinson’s disease, yet continued to create beautiful pieces. “I think there’s healing in art, not only is it good for the brain but for all kinds of things,” he said. “The result is not so much important as they come together to paint and share.”

Among those individuals who regularly come together are Margaret Smith, Phyllis Slesinger and Isaac ‘Ike’ Diamond, each of whom has been enjoying an amenity-filled lifestyle at Classic Residence.

A Salt Lake City native, Margaret Smith graduated from the University of Utah, and went on to Northwestern University for graduate work. While at Northwestern she met a professor whom she later married. After moving around New England for about ten years, her family eventually settled in Michigan.

Following her husband’s passing, Margaret lived alone until her children convinced her to move to an apartment in the Washington, D.C. area. She soon realized, however, that she wanted a home that would coincide with her lifestyle and needs.

With scenic views and decor resembling that of a traditional Georgetown mansion, Classic Residence seemed the perfect fit. Margaret can remain independent having peace of mind that if assisted living services are needed, they are available right in the building. “I looked at the different retirement communities, and this was far superior to anything I had seen,” she said. “It’s a very good place.”

Margaret had no problem adjusting to life at the community as she immediately sought opportunities to get involved. Always having an interest in art, but never having the time to fully pursue it, she was intrigued to find a class among the extensive list of available activities. “I joined the art class four years ago. Dick is such a good instructor that I knew immediately I wanted to continue,” she said. Margaret has served on the Residents’ Council and was appointed Chairman of the Welcoming Committee, an organization she highly credits for helping residents assimilate in the community. “There are so many activities and I encourage new residents to join some, just to sample them if nothing else,” she said. “My mother’s saying was ‘Do something new every year’ and I think I have.”

Many of her peers are taking her advice as Dick’s class has expanded tremendously. This, however, comes as no surprise to Phyllis Slesinger. “He is the best teacher I’ve ever had; he encourages you and has really brought out a lot of things I didn’t know I could do,” she said.

Phyllis was born, raised and married in Buffalo, NY. When her husband passed away, she moved to Florida for 26 years and traveled with her sister. “We went all over on cruises and trips to Europe and have wonderful memories,” she said. With her sister’s passing, Phyllis was encouraged by her son to move near him in Chevy Chase. “It was a difficult decision because I like my independence, but I’ve been very happy here because I’ve been kept so busy,” she said.

Phyllis continues her longtime hobbies of needlework and gardening. She had previously painted, but continues to be amazed at her achievements in the art class. Like Margaret, she participates in other activities at Classic Residence, which includes

volunteering to arrange flowers every Wednesday. “You have to learn to join in. If you just sit in your apartment, you’re not going to enjoy it,” she said. “If you get out, you meet all these different people, and everybody here is so friendly and incredible.” For Phyllis, this extends from the accommodating staff at the community to the unique residents she interacts with daily.

This is something Ike Diamond certainly agreed with, saying, “A lot of the people here are ex-college professors, doctors, physicists and just very interesting people to have dinner with and discuss your backgrounds.” Raised in New York, Ike went

to Brooklyn College, but decided to move to Washington, D.C. in 1941 to work for a newspaper. A month after getting married, he went into the Navy. “It was an education for me and I saw quite a bit of action,” he said. Upon his return to the District, he finished his education at George Washington University and worked in the advertising industry for 50 years before retiring with his wife to Florida.

While visiting their daughter, the couple drove past Classic Residence and decided to take a tour. Extremely pleased with the community, Ike’s wife expressed how ideal it would be to return to their hometown and enjoy a maintenance-free lifestyle in a supportive environment. Unfortunately shortly after their visit, she became ill and passed away, but Ike eventually decided to follow through with their plans and moved to the community. “They make a pretty good ef

fort to get you acclimated quickly here,” he said. “It’s been very comforting to me and I’m glad I made the decision.”

Ike has served on the Building and Grounds Committee working with building managers and engineers to assist in the upkeep of the community. This is just one of the many ways residents work with the staff in all aspects of life at Classic Residence. “We’ve been complimented on how well we’re surveying the necessities of a lifestyle we’d all like to have,” he said. Ike was also elected to the Residents’ Council and is part of the Food and Dining Committee. Feeling he had some talent that he never exercised, he decided to join the art class. “Sure enough, Dick gave me some very fundamental things to do and kept moving me up,” he said. “In one year, I became an artist.”

The community continually supports the residents by providing transportation for visits t

o sites featuring Dick’s murals. Other daytrips take advantage of the numerous cultural opportunities in the Washington, D.C. areas.

Whether it is in the Art Studio, Billiard Room, Indoor Pool and Fitness Center or along the outdoor

walking paths, individuals at the community enjoy abundant activities and numerous opportunities for socialization. And just as Dick’s students credit him for bringing out the best in them, the residents of Classic Residence in Chevy Chase can certainly say they have found a community that does the same.

There is no question that Leone and Malcolm Schoenberg are extremely proactive individuals. This has been demonstrated not only in their past careers, but in their volunteer work and longstanding affiliations with different organizations. They were also proactive, however, when making decisions for their future. Knowing they wanted to be in an environment that would embrace their active lifestyles, they made the move to Waverly Heights, a nonprofit Continuing Care Retirement Community (CCRC) located on the Main Line area outside of Philadelphia, Pa.

The Schoenbergs’ journey began with a blind date when Leone was a freshman at Syracuse. As their relationship progressed, she eventually transferred schools in order to start a life with him.

“I fell wildly in love with Malcolm,” she said. “We married and then I started at the University of the Arts in Philadelphia.”

With his degree in electrical engineering from MIT, Malcolm had worked for three large national companies until he came upon the opportunity to join a national investment banking firm in New York, where he worked for 21 years.

“It was very demanding, but very exciting,” he said. “I enjoyed building relationships with investors and doing what was best for them; it was a very rewarding career.”

Leone, on the other hand, enjoyed devoting her time to their three sons in addition to creating works as a fiber artist. She also took pride in getting involved with different causes from participating in peace organizations to managing a historic house in Ft. Washington, Pa.

“In the 30-40 years following graduation, I was a volunteer,” she said. In fact, the couple has participated in numerous organizations throughout their lives including the Highlands Historical Society, Montgomery County SPCA and the Visiting Nurses Association Community Services.

While Malcolm has also enjoyed fox hunting and skiing for 25 years, the couple has utilized much of their free time for traveling, their first trip being to Europe in 1953. “We have done about 40-45 trips and cruises all over the world,” said Malcolm. “We’ve visited a lot of wonderful and beautiful places.” Among their array of excursions, the Schoenbergs said their most interesting adventure was in 1982, when they spent three weeks in the People’s Republic of China.

Although the couple knew they always had their wonderful family home to return to when traveling, the time eventually came for them to plan ahead for their potential future needs. Their home of 44 years covered 20 acres of land and they each knew if something were to happen to the other, neither spouse could manage it all alone.

“We wanted a maintenance-free lifestyle,” said Leone. “There had also been the experience with my mother needing care, so we wanted to solve that problem out of fairness to our children.”

As a result, the Schoenbergs proceeded to explore different CCRCs throughout eastern Pennsylvania. It was the community of Waverly Heights that particularly stood out to the couple.

“I had always said while I would be willing to move, I didn’t want to change my lifestyle having worked hard for many years,” said Malcolm. “We only found a few places that met the standards that I wanted and Waverly was one of them.”

When the opportunity arose to move in, the Schoenbergs did not hesitate to secure their spot in the community, and they have enjoyed life ever since for over a decade. “It’s a very easy lifestyle,” said Leone. “The thing that appealed to me was that it’s not a competitive community; it’s very relaxed, yet busy, and very friendly and caring.”

What has been especially important to the couple is having the ability to remain active on their own terms and maintain outside pursuits. “There are about 50 volunteer committees here. You can be as active or inactive as you want,” said Leone.

As Malcolm still assists a few of his past clients and continues his 26-year role with the Board of Directors for the SPCA, he was elected to the Board of the Waverly Heights Residents’ Association in 2001 and became president for two terms. In addition to serving on three other committees, he was elected to the community’s Board of Trustees. Like her husband, Leone has been a member of the Residents’ Association Board and now co-chairs the Windfall resale shop which earns money for activities and programs. She is also a member of other committees, including the Trips and Tours Committee, and writes for the community’s magazine, The Waverly Window.

The couple has even expanded their volunteer efforts by participating in a community outreach program organized by Philadelphia Contact Reassurance. “We make telephone calls and reach out to people in the Philadelphia area who live alone and may not have contact with anyone else,” said Leone. “One of us in the 20-member group will call them every morning to see how they are, and chat with them for a few minutes.”

Even with their outside affiliations and involvement in onsite organizations and programs, the Schoenbergs still make time to enjoy the various activities the community has to offer.

“I play Wimbledon croquet and we attend lectures, concerts and parties during the month,” said Malcolm. “There is a great social life here with our fellow residents who are very friendly people.”

According to the couple, that friendliness also extends to the staff at Waverly. “They are wonderful. I can’t praise them enough,” said Leone.
For the Schoenbergs, having excellent healthcare was their first priority when making the move and knowing they have such a supportive staff only furthers their peace of mind with Waverly’s personal care and skilled nursing services. In fact, its skilled nursing center, Muirfield, which was renovated and expanded in 2010, has received “deficiency-free” surveys for the past three consecutive years, an achievement rarely seen in U.S. nursing homes.

And Malcolm and Leone are in no way surprised by this since he stayed at the center following an accident. “The healthcare is marvelous, and so convenient,” said Leone. “Muirfield is just a couple minutes away from our villa, so I could walk to see Malcolm and have my meals with him.”

When the Schoenbergs decided to look into a senior housing option, they wanted great healthcare and did not want to sacrifice their busy schedules. Instead, they have found so much more at a community where they not only have a sense of security, but their energetic lifestyles have flourished.

“One of the best decisions we ever made was moving to Waverly Heights,” said Leone.

As Atrium Village resident Ruth Klein walks through the crowded lobby of her home during a musical program, friends greet her enthusiastically. It is only a matter of minutes before she is dancing center stage with the performers, Gary Richman and “The Night at The Copa” Singers.

This comes as no surprise to her peers and the staff of the senior retirement community, located in Owings Mills, who know that Ruth’s motto is to stay busy and involved. Crediting this attitude for keeping her healthy and active at the age of 95, Ruth said, “I just wish I had more hours in the day.”

Born and raised in New York, Ruth and her husband raised a family in their beloved home in Randallstown that they purchased in 1963. Her husband has since passed away, but she has the support of her five children, six grandchildren and six great-grandchildren.

While several of her family members live nearby, Ruth enjoys visiting those outside of the area since travelling has always been an important part of her life. In fact, she has several unique destinations under her belt, including a 21-day African safari and a recent trip to Antarctica. She books most of her trips through Grand Circle Travel, an agency founded by Ethel Andrus in 1958, who also founded AARP.

Although her husband loved going on cruises, Ruth has always had a passion for more exotic locations. “Every year we went on a cruise, which I wasn’t too fond of because you would only get one day in a country,” she said. “As long as I went on one cruise a year, he would let me travel by myself on trips I was interested in.”

With a love for adventure, the outgoing and independent Ruth has had no qualms about venturing to various places by herself. “I make friends, so I don’t have any problem travelling alone,” she said. Although she has trips to Norway and Iceland planned, she also looks forward to an upcoming excursion to West Virginia with friends, along with a trip to Gettysburg, Pa. to explore its history with her granddaughter and great-grandchildren.

Aside from traveling, Ruth spent her days working in the library for over 25 years as the head of the clerical department. Retirement, however, was not very easy for Ruth. “I stayed home for one week and I couldn’t take it,” she said.

As a result, she got involved in a variety of volunteer opportunities, one of which involved working at the Liberty Senior Center. It was there she met Arnold Eppel, who was the director of the Baltimore County Department of Aging at the time and is now the executive director of Atrium Village. “I have known Ruth for 15 years. She is an exuberant lady who has fully embraced life and I am thrilled to have her here,” he said.

Although Ruth’s family had looked at several communities in the area, it was her relationship with Arnold that had fully assured them Atrium Village was the best choice, and there has been no question it was the right choice. Since the move, Ruth has made several friends and established strong connections with the rest of the staff as she lends a helping hand whenever she can. “The staff really appreciates the help,” she said. In fact, some even refer to her as “GG.” Ruth said, “It stands for great-grandma, which is what my kids call me.”

One example of the assistance she offers is folding the napkins after she enjoys her breakfast every morning in the Atrium Village dining room. “The food is very good,” she said. Not only good, the daily meals offered at the community are prepared with the goal of further promoting healthy lifestyles for residents.

As part of Atrium Village’s focus on hospitality, its Dining for Wellnessâ„¢ program offers Ruth and her peers creative dining choices that support specific areas of healthy living for seniors. Additionally, a fresh baked bread program and a no-sugar-added dessert program also provide unique options for individuals.

Active Aging Week is another initiative of the community, in conjunction with the International Council on Active Aging, that promotes active lifestyles for seniors. It includes activity for the mind, body and spirit, incorporating the six dimensions of wellness: physical activity, intellectual stimulation, emotional support, spirituality, social opportunity and vocational activity.

The community’s mission is also evident in its award-winning Wellness Everydayâ„¢ programs, classes and experiences that encourage residents to live life with meaning and vitality. This is a hallmark of the Senior Lifestyle Corporation approach, and every member of Atrium Village’s staff is committed to making residents feel like family.

The overall focus and support system at Atrium Village helps keep residents like Ruth thriving as she clearly takes advantage of these programs and amenities that enhance her busy lifestyle. While the community provides numerous activities and an exercise facility, its convenient location allows residents to enjoy opportunities offsite as well.

“I am a big exercise freak,” said Ruth. “I do water aerobics and I take a walk every day; I get up early before it gets hot outside.” She can also be found frequently using the exercise bikes in the community’s fitness center in addition to taking classes at the nearby Liberty Senior Center and utilizing the swimming pool next door at the Randallstown Community Center.

While Ruth maintains her busy schedule of social engagements and exercising, she has peace of mind with the knowledge that extensive health services are available onsite should anything happen to her. Atrium Village has an ongoing relationship with Genesis Rehabilitation Services, who provides physical, occupational and speech therapy for residents. A vibrant and outgoing rehab team assists residents in regaining the highest level of physical, social and emotional level of function by providing them with an individualized treatment plan. The majority of such services are covered 80 percent by Medicare part B and 20 percent by co-insurance while residents also have the assurance knowing they are welcome to use the exercise equipment in the Wellness Center anytime, regardless of therapy status.

For those considering the transition to senior housing, Ruth of course offers the advice of getting involved as much as possible based on her own experience at Atrium Village. Coming from someone who can enjoy the flexibility of traveling knowing she is returning to a home where she will be happily greeted by friends and continue to maintain a healthy lifestyle with a sense of security, this is certainly sound advice to follow.

The two were among a class of 150 men and six women when they met and graduated from Yale Law School 60 years ago. Not surprisingly, their ideas for the future were also in sync when they recently considered the idea of a retirement community and found Ingleside at King Farm, a continuing care community that was being built near their home.

Following their graduation, Imogene practiced law in New York while Leonard went to Washington, D.C. They married two years later and moved to Bethesda, Md. to start a family. Imogene stayed home to raise their five children and eventually returned to practice for 17 years. After retiring, she worked as a volunteer for the Montgomery County Hotline, an opportunity that she described as “fascinating and very rewarding.”
The couple remained in their Bethesda home for 23 years before moving to North Potomac when the nest emptied. “We also lived there, interestingly enough, for 23 years; it must be our magic number,” Leonard said with a laugh.

Although the Lehmans loved their second home that featured a first-floor master suite, they recognized that its location could leave them isolated geographically. “We realized that if we couldn’t drive we would be stuck,” said Imogene.

Also concerned about their potential future health needs and not wanting to burden their children, the self-described “planners” found the concept of a continuing care retirement community very appealing. “We didn’t want something to happen so that our children would have to move us some place and take care of all of the downsizing that was involved,” said Imogene.

As a result, they began researching and visiting different housing options until they learned about Ingleside at King Farm, which was being planned in Rockville, Md.

Imogene and Leonard were immediately impressed with the community, which would not only offer them a continuum of care, but a “walkable environment” with convenience to shopping, dining and activities. Although Ingleside at King Farm was not planned to be built for another two years, the couple knew it would be a great place to call home and reserved their apartment. “This had the combination of the design of the community itself and the convenience of its location,” said Leonard.

For the Lehmans, the decision to move to a community still under construction proved to have its advantages. “We had a two-year period to plan for the move, which allowed us to go through the downsizing systematically,” said Leonard. “We made our decision only looking at the floor plans, and if anything, we found since we’ve moved here that it has far exceeded our expectations.”

Along with a systematic move, the transition to Ingleside has enabled the Lehmans to enjoy a sense of community that stems from the other enthusiastic new residents.

“People with different backgrounds are sort of sharing the pioneering experience coming in at the same time, and as a result, you find a high level of cooperative spirit. They’re really enjoying their stay here,” said Leonard.

They also attribute this dynamic energy to the welcoming staff and those individuals who have played a role in Ingleside’s development. “They have done a beautiful job in planning, not only the design and layout of the building itself, but the programs that they have developed and their interest in creating a community,”said Leonard.

With this overall camaraderie and a close proximity to their fellow residents, the Lehmans could not be happier now having the lively tight-knit neighborhood they had desired.

“We didn’t realize when we were living in our house how much we missed contact with people,”said Imogene. “When we walk around King Farm, every resident says ‘Hello’ and smiles. This doesn’t happen in other places.”

As new residents continue to move in every month, the couple said they have met hundreds of individuals, whether it is on their daily walks or at dinner each night.

While Imogene and Leonard enjoy the social environment of Ingleside, they appreciate the flexibility of engaging in activities in and outside of the community. From a fitness center to art classes, residents have endless opportunities onsite with easy access to the offerings of Washington, D.C. Since they have subscribed to the Symphony at Strathmore Hall, the Lehmans take advantage of the community’s provided transportation. Although the couple and many other residents at Ingleside have their own cars or enjoy walking, there are shuttle buses traveling continuously to the Shady Grove Metro station.

With the extensive amenities and convenient lifestyle they have found since moving to Ingleside, the couple has no complaints, but they agree that the accommodating staff is always seeking ways to make life even better for residents.

“There is an eagerness here to be problem solvers,”said Leonard. “What can we do to make it even better here for you is the approach they have with the residents and we can feel this in everything that we do. The comfort level is very high.”

And the Lehmans also find that comfort with the healthcare services that are available onsite including Assisted Living, Skilled Nursing and Memory Care. With this security, they know they will not have to rely on their children and can remain together no matter what health changes may occur in the future. “In this kind of community, it’s not a matter of having to find another place to go if you have a medical problem. You have this opportunity for continuing care which was one of the attractive features for this place,” said Leonard.

As they enjoy an active lifestyle at Ingleside with peace of mind for the future, the couple shared how important it is for others to take advantage of these housing options while they are in a position to make the decision and find the right choice.

“We didn’t have to make the move when we did, but looking ahead rather than backward, we decided it was time to move onto another stage in our lives,” said Leonard. And their proactive planning certainly paid off as the Lehmans are continually proven at Ingleside that they did in fact make the best choice.

Just this past spring, the residential community celebrated the grand opening of a new, state-of-the-art Energy Club that provides a plethora of fitness activities.

Natalie Levine was quick to take advantage of the Energy Club’s spacious facilities, especially the heated, indoor swimming pool. Before moving to Martins Run in December of 2008, Natalie lived in Florida where she was an avid swimmer. “I swam every day in Florida,” says Natalie, who is thrilled to once again have a pool she can use year round. It takes her about 30 minutes to swim 10 laps in the Energy Club’s 18-yard pool. “I get a lot of satisfaction from swimming.”

Natalie also walks regularly, a healthy habit she began decades ago after her husband suffered a heart attack and was advised to walk as part of his rehabilitation program. “Walking not only helped him, it helped me,” Natalie says, noting that in all her 91 years of life she’s never had a serious illness. “We found it so enjoyable because we conversed on subjects we never would have talked about otherwise.” A deep appreciation for nature developed, and Natalie loves strolling around the Martins Run campus to admire the beautiful trees and flower beds.

For variety, Natalie also takes a yoga class. With her apartment-home connected to the glass-walled Energy Club by one short corridor, Natalie can easily walk over to attend the yoga classes that are held in the large group exercise room. “It’s relaxing,” she says. “The instructor tells us to do the best we can and not worry about doing it exactly as she does.”

Jack Goldfarb, who has been a resident of Martins Run since November of 2006, also participates in the yoga classes. “Yoga tones my muscles, gives me greater flexibility, and is good for relaxation,” he says. To enhance his strength, Jack has used some of the air-pressured resistance training equipment, which is located in another room of the Energy Club along with cardiovascular machines, such as recumbent steppers and bicycles. He also builds strength by walking in the pool. “One reason I love the Energy Club is because I’ll have a warm pool in wintertime!”

Open daily from early morning to mid-afternoon, the Energy Club is connected by a walk-thru to all the residences, eliminating the need to go outside. With large windows overlooking an outdoor patio, the attractive club also has a juice bar with tables and chairs that residents can use for post-workout refreshments. Locker rooms provide a convenient place to change clothes, store belongings, and shower.

Professional fitness instruction is a crucial part of the Energy Club’s services. “We have a fulltime lifeguard/fitness associate on staff,” says Linda Beaver, who is the fulltime fitness coordinator for the Energy Club. “In addition to leading exercise classes and teaching everyone how to use the exercise equipment, we provide individualized exercise programs to those residents who would like to follow a regimen designed specifically for them.”

When not exercising, both Natalie and Jack enjoy reading and frequently visit the newly renovated library at Martins Run. “I go there every day to read The New York Times,” says Natalie, who loves how the library was refurnished and redesigned for greater ease of use. Having a penchant for mysteries, Jack finds plenty of good reads from the 5,000-plus books in stock.

“Libraries are wonderful; they can stimulate your mind,” says Ann Ritterman, the community’s librarian and a resident of Martins Run for four years. “I try to provide whatever information I can to keep the residents here fully informed and entertained.” The library’s business center, which houses several computers, a printer and a copier, is well used by the residents, too, giving them access to the Internet and a wealth of software and other services.

A former elementary school teacher, Jack also enjoys the Martins Run University lecture series that are held in the auditorium. Led by college professors, the educational lectures cover a range of topics from politics and religion to music and medicine. “I also love going to the concerts and movies in our modern theater,” Jack says. The remodeled theater boasts plush seating and a large projection screen with surround sound, making it ideal for first-rate movies and live performances.

As for mealtime, Martins Run residents were recently introduced to the community’s new Terrace Dining Room. The Terrace offers buffet-style lunches and dinners, including a salad bar and dessert bar, in a casual environment. “I like being able to serve myself whatever I want,” says Jack. “The most delightful part is that I can have ice cream every night.”

Hilde and Jack Jagodzinski are fans of both the Terrace and Fireside Dining Rooms, admitting their decision on where to eat boils down to the menu for the day. “The buffet at the Terrace Dining Room usually wins us over, and my daughter and grandsons love going there for the wider selection of dishes.”

Natalie prefers dining in the elegant Fireside Dining Room where the ambiance is more reserved. “I enjoy the sit-down service,” she says, “and the fact that they offer a kosher menu.” For added entertainment, Martins Run hosts demonstration cooking events on certain nights throughout the year. Frequently, the executive chefs offer new, fresh menu choices much to the pleasure of residents.

Natalie’s busy social life also involves playing bridge three or four times a week and studying other languages. Yet, she still finds ample time to relax in her lovely apartment-home. “Before deciding to move to Martins Run, my husband and I stayed here for a three-month trial. It worked out so well that we decided to move in permanently,” Natalie recalls. “I love the view of the golf course.”
Hilde is also fond of her apartment view, which overlooks the golf course. Her and Jack moved into Martins Run this past February, and couldn’t be more pleased with their decision. “We’re still in the process of hanging pictures on the wall so our apartment is a bit bare, but we don’t notice much because it is such a pleasant atmosphere here,” says Hilde. “The people here make it feel like home.”

All of the apartment-homes are being newly designed to feature the latest in home design and deluxe living amenities. In addition to spacious, modern kitchens and baths, the one- and two-bedroom apartments have walk-in closets and washers and dryers. The upscale décor includes durable bamboo flooring as well as energy efficient windows, patio doors and HVAC system.

While Hilde and Jack are still becoming acquainted with the senior living community, they are aware of the many opportunities available to them, and Hilde says “the staff keeps residents well-informed with all of the memos, as far as the abundance of activities going on throughout the community.” An avid reader, Hilde is especially looking forward to taking advantage of the large assortment of books in the library.

“The Energy Club, Terrace Dining Room, new apartment designs and other renovations enhance the active, diverse lifestyles our residents seek,” says Linda Sterthous, CEO of Martins Run. “The changes have transformed Martins Run, opening the door to a whole world of new recreational, culinary and social experiences.”

And it was no different when she found herself making the transition to a retirement community in Baltimore. Although this decision can be overwhelming for many, Reba was optimistic about moving to Springwell Senior Living, and her new home has far exceeded her expectations.

A native of southern New Jersey, Reba married her high school sweetheart when she was 19 years old. Since he was in the Navy, the couple moved to Pensacola, Fl. in 1941. During his nearly 20 years of service, the couple traveled to different locations while raising their three children.

The family eventually settled in Hyattsville, Md., and Reba’s husband went to George Washington University for a Pharmacy degree. While the children were in school, Reba worked as a secretary for General Electric for 14 years, but later realized she wanted to take a different direction.

“I decided I wanted to do something else,” she said. Having taken piano lessons in her youth, she wanted to continue this hobby and learn how to teach others the instrument.

Fresh out of school, her husband started his second career working for a pharmacy, but he was later presented with the opportunity to move to Baltimore and buy a drug store. Although Reba was somewhat reluctant to make the move, they ended up settling in a home in Monkton, where she was able to organize a community of students for teaching piano.

Unfortunately, tragedy struck when Reba’s husband was involved in an automobile accident that took his life. “I didn’t know what to do, so I just stayed there,” she said.

Reba, however, carried on the way she knew how by moving to the Mt. Washington neighborhood in Baltimore and continuing to teach piano. She spent two decades providing lessons to others while getting involved in musical and teaching organizations.

At age 85, she decided she had had enough of teaching piano, but after a year or two, she hungered for social activity and began considering the idea of moving to a retirement community. Although she loved her home, she knew it was becoming too much of a responsibility to maintain.

Her daughter Carol, who lived in Utah at the time, offered to come to town to assist Reba in researching the different options. With the help of Janet Kurland, LCSW-C, a Senior Care Specialist at Jewish Community Services, they began evaluating local communities. “I have never met anyone with as many resources at her fingertips,” said Carol.

Reba then started visiting several different communities, but it was when she walked into the apartment she currently lives in at Springwell Senior Living that she said, “This is for me.”

It was a clear decision as she said Springwell’s apartments were much more spacious in comparison to the apartments at other communities she visited within her budget. Offering Independent and Assisted Living along with Memory Care, Springwell does not require a large entrance fee, which was another aspect of the newly refurbished community that greatly appealed to Reba.

Although the choice of her future home came easily, the thought of physically moving was more difficult for Reba. Fortunately, her children provided her with assistance in downsizing, moving and setting up her new apartment.

“When it came time to make the actual move I was traumatized,” she said. “I couldn’t have done it without them.”

When entering the community, Reba had high hopes for her new home. “I came in with the attitude that I was going to make friends,” she said. And she has certainly done that, establishing relationships with not only several of her fellow residents, but the staff as well. “The great thing about Springwell is its small enough that everyone knows your name,” she continued. Her peers have not only embraced Reba, but they are especially drawn to her dog, Robin, whom she credits in helping her with the transition and meeting new people in the community.

Because Springwell is only two blocks from her previous home, she has also been able to stay in touch with many of her friends and neighbors. In fact, she often walks Robin several times a day and catches up with her old neighborhood connections.

Aside from making friends throughout the community, Reba has found the social activity she desired after no longer teaching piano. With the community’s location in close proximity to the offerings of Baltimore, she now enjoys going to the symphony, Center Stage and the art museums while attending various lectures and classes at Springwell. She has also joined the Myerberg Senior Center, located right down the road, where she participates in its offered programs.

Although the ability to stay socially engaged has been a huge perk for Reba, she has found that the care and support at Springwell is an especially important part of the community. Along with assisted living and memory care on the same 15-are campus, residents have access to the unique Partners in Care program that provides a range of personal and health related services from affiliated community healthcare organizations.

As Reba is currently going through rehabilitation after a recent knee replacement surgery, the convenience of her new setting has far surpassed that of her Mt. Washington home where she was living when her other knee was replaced several years ago.

“It was quite difficult,” she said about rehab in her previous home. “Here it has been much easier.”

“When I went through this at home I had to hire someone to drive me places,” Reba continued. Now, she enjoys having scheduled transportation along with a more easily accessible living environment overall. Knowing she has a support network, Reba looks forward to her full recovery in order to eventually pursue her goal of taking a cruise touring Norway.

It is the friendly atmosphere, convenience, maintenance-free living and other major benefits Reba has enjoyed at Springwell that encourages her to advise others to make the move sooner versus later.

From her own experience evaluating her home prior to the move, especially in terms of maintenance and social activity, she said, “Plan ahead and be realistic when looking at your current home, what it offers you, and what you are willing to do.”

While she may have spent several years teaching piano, Reba offers a truly valuable lesson when it comes to making decisions about the future. Like so many others, she was facing the difficulty of maintaining her home, but her research and positive outlook certainly paid off as seen in her happiness at the new Springwell community.
