“Why are you doing this?”
I have had some conversations recently that made me realize it might be a good idea to address the question “Why are you doing this?” on the blog.
The catalyst of my first project was to try and experience first-hand the transition I had advised so many others to make; the move from one’s home to a “senior housing option”. I felt that it was somewhat odd that I should be viewed as an “expert” in senior housing if I had never tried to experience that transition myself.
In addition to better relating to those people I help, I want to build awareness that these are homes to “people” not “old people”, or “people with disabilities”. I cannot think of a better way to do this than to move in and try my best to experience these options as a 43 year old able bodied adult.
However, the main reason I am engaging these unique projects is to inspire people to think differently about the choices that are available now for elders, and begin to think about what the possibilities could be for us, our children, and our grandchildren in the future.
I love thinking “outside the box” and inspiring others to do the same. I hope that you can find some inspiration in my ramblings that makes you think differently about the definition of “aging”.
