People on the Move – Vera Waltman Mayer and Steve Gurney to receive leadership in aging awards
Awards to be presented June 3, 2010 at a gala event sponsored by Seabury Resources for Aging with Bob Levey to emcee.
Washington, D.C.… Steve Gurney, Founder and Publisher of the Guide to Retirement Living Sourcebook and Vera Waltman Mayer, newly retired Iona Senior Advocate and Coordinator of the DC Coalition on Long Term Care, will be honored with Seabury’s Leadership in Aging Awards. The Awards, which recognize providers of innovative and outstanding service to older adults in the Washington area, will be presented at a gala event on June 3 from 6:30 to 9 p.m. at The Fannie Mae Building. Bob Levey, former columnist for The Washington Post, will be the master of ceremonies. Proceeds from the event will benefit Seabury Resources for Aging (formerly Episcopal Senior Ministries.)
“The Seabury Leadership in Aging Award is especially meaningful to me because it offers the opportunity to celebrate the important District programs initiated through the work of the Seabury staff together with the DC Coalition on Long Term Care for low-and- moderate income adults” says honoree Vera Waltman Mayer. Ms. Mayer founded the DC Coalition on Long Term Care to develop additional long term care options in the home and community for DC residents and to improve the wages, benefits, training and oversight of the workers in assisted living and home care. Ms. Mayer recently worked with the DC Board of Nursing to develop a model to improve the training, oversight and opportunities for advancement for all direct care health workers in hospitals, nursing homes, home care, supportive housing and dialysis centers. Seabury’s Susan Walker is a major leader in this ongoing project. Ms. Mayer helped to create programs to improve the quality of guardianship services for adults in the District.
Through his ground breaking print and web Retirement Living SourceBook, a comprehensive guide to programs, services and housing options for older adults, Steve Gurney has provided a link to resources for aging adults and their caregivers. He also founded the Proaging network which offers networking and professional development to enable senior-serving professionals to better serve seniors, caregivers, and their families. “I am honored and pleased to receive this award and proud to be a part of a network of professionals, including Seabury, which provides quality care and living options for older adults,” says Mr. Gurney.
Tickets for the gala are $90 – $175 and are available by calling 202-414-6310. Proceeds support Seabury’s free or low cost services to support older adults including housing, care management, home repair and maintenance, nutrition services, volunteer services, transportation, and community education.
