Music helps residents at assisted living center

The Mancos-based founder of the I’d Like to Teach the World to Play program provides bi-weekly music therapy for dementia residents and hospice patients at Vista Mesa Assisted Living Residence.

For an hour Friday afternoon, Lipman and about a dozen residents formed a circle, sang and played the drums, chimes, and American Indian and Japanese flutes. Lipman uses his program to instill independence, increase self-esteem and encourage integration among his elderly students.

“It’s gratifying to see the seniors happy and to share in those positive qualities that music brings out,” Lipman said at Vista Mesa after the session. “Everybody … has music in them.”
