More “young people” in Nursing Homes

Approximately 15 percent of the residents at a New Mexico nursing home are in their 50s , which is one of the largest nursing facilities in the county. This phenomena is rapidly increasing in all parts of the country due to alternative elder care treatments like assisted living, home care and solutions for aging in place.

The most common reasons younger residents move into nursing homes is to recover from serious accidents or because of drug- or alcohol-induced injuries, such as a stroke, Lisa Higgins, the social services director at Cedar Ridge Inn in Farmington, NM.  The reason they stay is because they lose their apartment or home while receiving therapy and don’t have the family or money needed to leave, she said.
