MICHELLE alvarez JOINS AARP MEDIA TEAM IN KEY ROLE
Former Hearst Magazines Senior Manager of Public Relations to Manage
AARP Publications, Entertainment Media Strategy
Washington — AARP has appointed Michelle Alvarez to the newly created position of Senior Manager of Media Relations for AARP to support AARP’s publications, broadcast and entertainment efforts. Alvarez joins the organization as a seasoned media relations professional with expertise in the publishing and entertainment arena, having worked extensively in publicizing leading magazines such as Cosmopolitan, Good Housekeeping, Popular Mechanics and Redbook.
“With ad sales and readership of AARP The Magazine on the upswing, more titles in the AARP Books Program and ongoing improvements in our publishing and broadcasting efforts, this is the perfect time for Michelle to join our team,” said Mark Kitchens, AARP Director of Media Relations. “Her knowledge of publishing and entertainment public relations will help the organization better tell our story and play a more active role in the media.”
Alvarez joins AARP from Hearst Magazines where she served as Senior Manager, handling day-to-day consumer and trade public relations for multiple titles. While there, Alvarez provided strategic counsel and helped lead a diverse array of publicity events. She also helped in a team management capacity, overseeing others who coordinated media and supported events.

Alvarez previously worked at Sloane & Company where she held the role of Account Executive. While at the firm, she worked with clients including AT&T, PRIMEDIA Inc., Motor Trend, Automobile Magazine, Bauer Publishing’s Life & Style and IMAX. There she built relationships with top-tier media outlets, securing placements with many leading media organizations such as CNN, Good Morning America and the TODAY Show.
Prior to her time at Sloane & Company, Alvarez served as a coordinator at EURO RSCG Middleberg where she worked with various Web clientele such as ConsumerReports.org, Better Homes and Garden online and WeightWatchers.com.
Additionally Alvarez has experience in the celebrity publicity arena having worked in the Latin entertainment division at Rogers & Cowan. She has also worked side by side with the chief of public affairs for the U.S. Department of Interior’s Bureau of Land Management.
Alvarez earned her Bachelor of Arts Degree in Journalism, with a minor in Spanish from Pennsylvania State University. She speaks Spanish fluently.
