Foundation’s Inaugural Grants Will Help Sustain Two Non-Profits Improving the Quality of Life for Low-Income Seniors
Silver Spring, Maryland – May 11, 2010: The Family & Nursing Care Foundation, a fund of the Community Foundation for Montgomery County, is proud to announce grant awards to two non-profit community organizations that provide low-income seniors with the dedicated home care they need to remain in the safety and comfort of their own homes.
Community Ministries of Rockville and Home Care Partners, Inc. will each receive $15,000 grants towards their Elderly Ministries and City of Gaithersburg programs, respectively.
“Both of the organizations selected for the grants are doing a tremendous job in serving the needs of low-income seniors,” said Sandy Kursban, founder of Family & Nursing Care, Inc., and its Foundation. “Improving the quality of life for low-income seniors, many of whom are unable to afford the kind of care they need and deserve, is the reason I started the Foundation. I feel confident that by supporting these two groups, a very important need is being addressed.”
Both grantees have found that as little as 2-3 hours of home care services a week are enough to provide many clients with the physical and psychological support they need to remain independent and in their homes.
“We were absolutely thrilled to receive the grant,” said Marla Lahat, Executive Director of Home Care Partners, Inc. “We were facing a situation this year where we were contemplating reducing services to clients, and the grant gave us the ability to continue the services we were providing as well as expand them to more families.”
“The grant is both a blessing and a wonderful opportunity to better serve our clients in the Elderly Ministries program,” said Agnes Saenz, Executive Director of Community Ministries of Rockville. “The grant could not have come at a more perfect time, given the current budget difficulties in Montgomery County. Having the grant has allowed us to not only continue our current services, but to serve new clients and add new hours to existing clients who need more services to remain at home.”
Founded in 2008, the Family & Nursing Care Foundation solicited proposals for its inaugural grants in October 2009. Several proposals came in from non-profit community organizations that offer free or reduced-cost home care services to low-income seniors in Montgomery and Prince George’s Counties in Maryland, as well as in Washington, DC.
