Fairfax County needs volunteers to install grab bars in the bathrooms of older adults who may be at risk of falling. Volunteers will receive training on how to install grab bars. Contact Volunteer Solutions at 703-324-5406, TTY 703-449-1186, or [email protected].

“Installing grab bars is a simple and inexpensive way to help older people avoid serious injury,” said Grace Starbird, director of the Department of Family Services’ Fairfax Area Agency on Aging.

A grab bar is a safety device that attaches to a wall and is used as a hand-grip.

According to the Centers for Disease Control, one third of adults 65 and older fall each year in the United States and, among older adults, falls are the leading cause of injury deaths.

This volunteer effort is part of a larger plan to ensure Fairfax County becomes a more “aging friendly” community. Details of the Fairfax 50+ Action Plan are at www.fairfaxcounty.gov/olderadults.

Fairfax County is committed to nondiscrimination on the basis of disability in all county programs, services and activities. To request this information in an alternate format, call Department of Family Services’ Fairfax Area Agency on Aging at 703-324-5411, TTY 703-449-1186.
