Caregivers Conference – Prince William County
annual caregivers’ conference presented by the Caregivers’ Conference Committee of the Prince William Area Agency on Aging. The 2008 conference will be held on Saturday, April 26, 2008 from 8:30 a.m. to 4:00 p.m. The theme of the conference is “Steps in Caregiving: Finding Joy in the Journey.” The conference is being held at Potomac Place, 2133 Montgomery Avenue, Woodbridge, Virginia.
The conference offers a wide variety of experts in the areas of caregiving and aging. Jane H. Woods, former Secretary of Health and Human Services for the Commonwealth of Virginia, will speak about the challenges and rewards of caregiving. Courtney S. Tierney, Director of the Prince William Area Agency on Aging, will provide an overview of the aging network, and Andrew J. Carle, Director of the Assisted Living and Senior Housing Administration at George Mason University, will discuss housing options for older adults. Caregivers will learn to care for themselves through tips and strategies provided by Eileen Loving, Certified Nursing Instructor at Birmingham Green Nursing Home and Assisted Living Facility, and Barbara Watts, the Outreach Coordinator with Evercare Hospice and Palliative Care, will teach participants to reduce stress with guided imagery and relaxation techniques. Agencies, organizations and businesses providing services to caregivers and older adults will be on exhibit throughout the conference.
The conference is an excellent opportunity for local and long distance caregivers, professionals in geriatric health care and social work, and volunteers who work with older adults. It explores the process of caregiving and caregiver issues, and offers practical solutions for increasing communication and coping skills and connecting caregivers to resources.
The registration fee is $25 per person, $40 per couple, and includes a continental breakfast, lunch and respite care (if required). Registration and payment must be received by Friday, April 18, 2008. Early registration is encouraged as this annual conference is highly attended and space is limited. To register, please contact the Prince William Area Agency on Aging at 703—792-6374.
