Affordable, Sustainable and Universal Design in Howard County
Learn about a new Howard County housing initiative, focusing on homes that are “green,” affordable, and universally designed, on Monday, October 6, at 7:00 p.m. at the Ellicott City Senior Center, 9401 Frederick Road.
Sponsored by the Homes for Life Coalition of Howard County, the program will feature presentations by Stacy Spann, Director of the Howard County Department of Housing and Community Development, and Joshua Feldmark, Executive Director of the Howard County Office of Environmental Sustainability.
They will discuss The Glens at Guilford, a planned development near the Route 1 corridor in Jessup on property owned by the Howard County Housing Commission. The single-family, detached homes will feature energy-efficient and envirornmentally- friendly building concepts and products and thus be sustainable or “green.” Universal design concepts and products, such as no-step entrances, wider doorways and hallways, and lever handles, will be used throughout the development, making it possible for residents to remain in their homes regardless of age or ability. The affordable homes will be geared toward moderate-income buyers.
One of the houses in this livable, pedestrian-friendly community will be a “Demonstration Home,” that will be open to the public as an educational tool focusing on the value of universal design and sustainability.
