Administrator Asks “Why Can’t Nursing Home Residents Take a Vacation?”
Denver Post article details a touching and innovative story about 18 residents of two Denver nursing homes: A 10-day road trip through the American Southwest, from Denver to San Diego.
The road trip was the brainchild of Tammy Kendall, administrator at Denver North Care Center. She was on vacation in Jamaica,
taking a shower, when she had an epiphany: “Why can’t folks in a nursing home go on a vacation?” she asked herself. Since 1995, she’d taken nursing home residents on overnight camping trips, she reasoned. Why not a longer adventure?
When she got back to Denver, she put the same question to the corporation that runs Denver North and the plan was born.
