SAGE, a National LGBT Senior Organization, Hosts 4th National Conference on Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual and Transgender Aging

AARP is Sponsor of “It’s About Time: LGBT Aging in a Changing World”

NEW YORK, NY – Services and Advocacy for Gay, Lesbian, Bisexual & Transgender Elders (SAGE) is pleased to announce the Fourth National Conference on LGBT Aging, “It’s About Time: LGBT Aging in a Changing World.” This year’s conference is sponsored by AARP – the nearly 40 million member strong nonprofit, nonpartisan membership organization that helps people 50+ have independence, choice and control in ways that are beneficial and affordable to them and society as a whole. The conference will offer resources, information, tools, insights, and networking opportunities to effectively address what LGBT aging will look like in the 21st century.

Over the next quarter century, the number of seniors in America is projected to grow from 12% to 20% of the total population. By 2030, the population of LGBT seniors age 65 and above is expected jump from 2.5 million to as many as 4.7 million as a result. The needs and challenges facing the current generation of LGBT seniors differ from their heterosexual counterparts in profound ways. LGBT seniors are twice as likely to live alone; half as likely to have life partners or significant others; half as likely to have no close relatives to call for help; and four times less likely to have children to help them. For professionals, researchers, providers, all Seniors and others interested in LGBT aging issues, SAGE’s Fourth National Conference is a wonderful opportunity to get the information and tools needed to improve life for older LGBT people.
