Playing Scrabble With Her Caregiver: Home Care Agencies
An enthusiastic Scrabble player, Helen Evelyn Murphy found just what she needed in the caregiver provided to her by an in-home care agency, a companion and a scrabble competitor. Helen, a former employee of the Historical Society at the White House and a mother of three and grandmother of nine, lives with her daughter. She has been receiving in-home care since last November.
Comfort Keepers, the in-home care agency that Helen and her family selected, provides non-medical in-home care, which, according to Laura Pierce, co-owner of the agency, includes a variety of services “from meal preparation and laundry services to daily exercises and companionship and encouragement.” After Helen’s son, David, looked into in-home care services for her, she decided that it would be nice to have a little help around the house and better still to have the companionship that a caregiver can provide.
“I enjoy having Robyn, my caregiver, here to prepare meals, help around the house and play scrabble,” says Helen. However, assistance with daily living tasks is not all that an in-home care agency can provide. After a hip replacement surgery, Helen’s caregiver visited her in the hospital to provide support to her and her family. Most recently, her caregiver helped arrange for House Calls to the Hair, an in-home salon service, to visit Helen and give her a shampoo, wash and style. Helen is looking and feeling good; she is certainly ready for her next Scrabble match.
