About Counseling for Caregivers

HELP FOR CAREGIVERS

In-Home Counseling

Caring for an aged loved one can be a source of great joy, but what happens when that caregiving becomes overwhelming, threatening one's own health and family relationships? Who helps the caregivers--the daughters, sons, husbands, wives, sisters and brothers--cope with the feelings of guilt, anger and anxiety that so often accompany caring for a dependent older relative?

Counseling for Caregivers provides information, referral, education and in-home counseling to family members caring for an older loved one.

The program specializes in helping families caring for an older relative with Alzheimer's disease or other disabling illnesses. Counseling for Caregivers social work professionals offer one-to-one counseling in the home to help caregivers maintain their own health and well-being while coping with the demands of caregiving. They also help to educate family members about the changes in a loved one's behavior or physical health.

Counseling for Caregivers can arrange respite care for the older relative so a caregiver can enjoy a movie, go to work or spend time with a friend. The program connects clients to other resources in the community and, when needed, helps them obtain financial assistance. The program is non-sectarian.

The Center's Counseling for Caregivers program helps caregivers find the skills and services they need to balance caring for their older relative with taking care of themselves.
