Presenter:   Bruce A. Birnberg, LCSW, Executive Director of Stein Hospice

Course Outline:

Exploration of the role and function of Hospice in                        30 minutes

end-of-life-care

Discuss core information on Death in America                              30 minutes

Multicultural Perspective on afterlife belief and rituals             60 minutes

Evaluations                                                                                           10 minutes

Objectives:

Demonstrate knowledge of core concepts of death, dying, grief and the afterlife from at least two cultures.

Demonstrate knowledge of how beliefs, values and assumptions about both life and death influence the grieving process.

Articulate the role that rituals play in the grieving process.

Understand the impact of the social worker’s own values, ethics and assumptions on those dying or grieving.

Target Audience: entry, immediate, and advance social workers who work in geriatric and hospice settings.
