Susan I. Wranik, speech-language pathologist, and Nikki Haddad, personal chef, will be the presentors for this event put on by AAA Warman Home Care and Carriage Hill Bethesda, co-sponsored by NASW- Maryland Chapter.
This program will increase social workers’ awareness and understanding of swallowing issues that affect seniors and knowledge of appropriate resources to address them. It will provide an anatomical and physiological overview of swallow-ing and when physiological and cognitive issues present a challenge to the normal swallowing process. It will provide participants with an understanding of dysphagia, its diagnosis, and its treatment to include the role of dietary changes. Participants will have the opportunity to see and handle foods pre-pared with dysphagia in mind, focusing on maintaining presentation and quality of life. The program will also strive to expose common misunderstandings in addressing dysphagia and best practices.
