The POMONA COLLEGE GLEE CLUB from Claremont, California comes to Philadelphia to present a free concert of classical music, opening their 2015 East Coast tour. Under the direction of Donna M. Di Grazia, the choir will perform at Church of the Holy Trinity, Rittenhouse Square on Thursday, May 21, 2015 at 7:30 p.m.

The 33-voice chamber ensemble brings an all-a cappella program that includes pieces from the 16th century to the present, including Eric Whitacre’s Sainte-Chapelle, William Harris’ Faire is the heaven (on a visionary text by Edmund Spenser), and works by Byrd, Palestrina, Stanford, Lauridsen and others.

In a recent conversation, Di Grazia shared how excited the Glee Club is to be presenting this tour-opening performance. “It will be a tremendous opportunity for our students to sing here in Philadelphia, so close to the hometown of one of our singers, Chris Donnay of Bryn Mawr, and to offer this program in The Church of the Holy Trinity, Rittenhouse Square, where we have been so warmly welcomed.” Audience members are invited to a post-concert reception with the performers immediately following the performance.

The 2015 Pomona College Glee Club tour schedule also includes concerts at St. Columba’s Episcopal Church in Washington D.C., First Presbyterian Church in Stamford, CT., and St. Ignatius of Antioch in New York City. In addition, the group will offer the choral prelude at 3:30 p.m. for the Evensong service on Sunday, May 24 at the Washington National Cathedral. All performances are free and open to the public.

Choral music has played an especially important role in the cultural life of Pomona College since its founding in 1887, beginning with the Choral Union and the Men’s Glee Club in the late 1800s, and the Women’s Glee Club in 1902. Today Pomona’s rich choral tradition continues with two mixed-voice ensembles: the larger College Choir and the Glee Club. The Glee Club tours annually, traveling most recently to Chicago, Madison WI, and St. Louis, with especially memorable performances in Rockefeller Chapel at the University of Chicago, and in St. Louis’s Christ Church Cathedral and the Cathedral Basilica of St. Louis. Previous tours have taken the ensemble to Europe, including England, Poland and Germany, as well as to Vancouver, B.C., Hawaii, and throughout the continental United States. The ensemble’s repertoire focuses on challenging classical music spanning the 16th through the 21st centuries.

Pomona College is a selective co-educational liberal arts institution with an enrollment of approximately 1500 students who follow an academic program encompassing major fields in the arts, humanities, natural sciences and social sciences. It is located at the foot of the San Gabriel Mountains in Claremont, California, 35 miles east of Los Angeles, and is the founding member of The Claremont Colleges.
