Serving Those Who Served: Programs That Care for Aging Veterans

| We owe a tremendous debt to the men and women that have
served our country through military service – especially in times of war. There are some excellent (but not well publicized) programs that help repay this debt with care for aging veterans and their spouses or widows. These programs are designed to maximize each Veteran’s functional independence and lessen the burden of disability on Veterans, their families, and caregivers. Veteran’s assistance programs help pay for the care of elderly and senior veterans. Learn about VA benefits that are available to help pay for the cost of care like the Aid & Attendance benefit that can help pay for long-term care such as home health care, assisted living or nursing home care and the Housebound Pension paid to Veterans who are substantially confined because of a permanent disability. This session will be taught by Attorney Terry Douglas and Financial Advisor Toni Whaley.
Terry Douglas, founded the Douglas Law Office based in Annapolis, Maryland. Her practice focus is Estate Planning (including Wills, Trusts, and Powers of Attorney), Long-Term Care Planning, Asset Protection, and Veterans Pension Benefits. Her in-depth experience with both military and civilian families helps her appreciate the importance of providing excellent service, as well as the close personal attention those families want and deserve. Terry provides a variety of free workshops designed to teach fundamental estate planning concepts, and she has served as guest lecturer on estate planning for local community senior centers. She is also a mediator and collaborative law practitioner. Ms. Douglas has a law degree from University of Minnesota Law School and a BA in Economics from Wartburg College and was admitted to practice law in Maryland in 1997. She is a member of the Maryland State Bar Association, Estate and Trust Law Section, Anne Arundel County Bar Association, National Academy of Elder Law Attorneys, National Care Planning Council, and the Anne Arundel Senior Provider Group. Previosuly she served as Commander (O-5), U.S. Coast Guard Reserve, Judge Advocate General/Legal Officer.
Toni Whaley is a partner in Paladin Advisor Group. As a professional member of the American Association for Wartime Veterans, Toni provides education and advocacy that focuses on the VA Aid & Attendance pension. Toni is a topical speaker on issues such as personal financial fitness, becoming your own banker, VA benefits, legal services and personal responsibility. When helping others construct their financial life, Toni’s goal is to give them confidence that peace of mind within their reach.
