Family Conflicts in Caregiving
|Most of us count on assistance from our children as we age. The generation in care today, as the parents of the Baby Boomers, typically have multiple offspring to whom they can turn – but what seems like an advantage can often lead to bad behavior by well (and not so well) meaning adult children. The conflicts that arise can be a major obstacle to both financial planning and delivering care; placing senior serving professionals in uncomfortable situations. There are common patterns to these conflicts. Knowing them can help avoid the land mines. This session will cover common issues, their causes and warning signs and how to handle both conflict resolution and the ethical issues you may encounter.
Debra Turkat, LICSW, MSW, MBA of the Geriatric Therapy and Support Center will address the behavioral issues involved – what causes conflicts and how to cope with them effectively. After working with Multiple Sclerosis patients, HIV/AIDS patients and trauma rehab patients in the Texas Medical Center, she most recently worked at The Washington Home, with mostly senior patients in the rehab unit. While at The Washington Home Debra rekindled her affinity for working with seniors that started when she volunteered regularly in a nursing home with her children. In March she went to Cuba as a delegate with the National Association of Social Workers, to study Cuba’s social services for their seniors. She holds a Master of Social Work from the University of Houston, a Master of Business Administration from New York University and a Bachelor of Arts from Barnard College of Columbia University. Debra currently works at NICoE Fort Belvoir, a standalone clinic devoted entirely to service members with TBI – traumatic brain injury. She does psychotherapy in this state-of-the-art intersdisciplinary setting for service members and spouses who are caregivers.
Conflict Management Coach Ann Rosser of Finding Resolution will address strategies for avoiding and resolving conflicts. As a leadership development consultant, certified coach, mediator and facilitator, Ann utilizes her over 20 years of executive experience to improve the performance of organizations and individuals by helping them find the courage to communicate about what they want to change. Prior to starting her own business, she was a senior executive for a national physician medical association and a Fortune 500 company. Adept at recognizing and developing leadership talent, she helps clients deal with current situations and effectively envision their future. Highly organized and enthusiastic with a positive and motivating style, she is a creative problem solver and communicator. Ann focuses on the specifics of goals – not generalities, the power that attitude holds in success and the importance of self-awareness in becoming a good leader. She is an effective personal sounding board — responding to concerns and issues with insightful feedback and asking questions to prompt self-examination. Ann is a certified mediator (Supreme Court of Virginia). She is a former board member of the Northern VirginiaMediation Service, Vice President of the Women Alliance for Financial Education and is a graduate of Leadership Arlington.
Our panelists will then be joined by NARC President Alan Dubow for an interactive discussion of ethics for senior serving professionals in these situations.
