This 3-hour program on Dementia will focus on the following:
1. Definition of the disease and an overview of current theories of cognitive impairment.
a. Identify early onset symtomatolgy and the behavioral and cognitive symptoms of the disease.
b. Practical approaches to medication and non-medication management of older adults
c. Discuss the neuropsychological exam and its use in the diagnosis and monitoring
2. An interdisciplinary team approach to rehabilitation and management of an individual with dementia to help them maintain maximum independence for as long as possible.
a. List the various team players who care for an individual and their ISP.
b. Discuss family involvement: education and support
c. Discuss techniques used to prevent and manage aggressive behaviors.
d. Discuss the role spirituality plays in the care of the resident with dementia.
3. Global concern- the number of individuals with dementia grows and grows
a. Dementia: An international perspective
b. Strategic Vision for Chronic Diseases
c. Patient Protection and the Affordable Care Act 2011
