The Beacon 50+Expo — a free annual event featuring expert speakers, health screenings, informative resources, technology education and entertainment for older adults and their families — will take place this fall on Sunday, October 19, from noon to 4 p.m., at the Silver Spring Civic Building in downtown Silver Spring, Md.
The keynote speaker will be Dr. Robert Fischell, inventor of dozens of life-changing medical devices — including the rechargeable pacemaker, the flexible stent, the implantable insulin pump, and a new anti-migraine device. His topic will be “Biomedical engineering for humanity.”
Also, new this year: free technology seminars, courtesy of AARP’s TEK program.
Free health screenings, including blood pressure and glaucoma screenings, will be provided at both locations. Flu and pneumonia vaccines will also be available (free with a Medicare card).
More than 100 exhibitors — including government agencies, nonprofits and local businesses — will offer information and answer questions about retirement communities, home remodeling, financial planning, healthcare, travel, fitness and senior services, government resources and more. Giveaways and door prizes will be plentiful.
The 50+Expos are presented every fall as a community service by The Beacon Newspapers. Sponsors include CVS pharmacy, AARP, CareFirst BlueCross BlueShield, and Holy Cross Hospital, among others.
