Innovative Wheelchair Art Connects All Ages and Abilities

Ten-year-old Augie Webster is a bright boy with severe physical limitations as a quadriplegic with cerebral palsy.  After attending an art exhibit for skateboard artist Sean Greene, Augie used his communication device to tell his mother, Kathy Webster, “We can make wheelchair art.”   Augie’s brother and sister enthusiastically supported the idea and Wheelchair Action Art was born. Working together, the Webster family has developed a technique for creating beautiful contemporary art in a collaborative manner.  With the wheels [...]

New York City Prepares for the “Age Wave” With Creativity

As the silver tsunami is impacting our country, New York City is establishing itself as a leader.  The big apple is taking innovative steps like using idle school buses for mid-day grocery shopping trips for seniors.  In fact, the World Health Organization recognizes New York as a leader in this movement. Is That Really YOUR Television Remote?

Visitors to my house are often shocked when they see my television remote.  I often get the comment, “you don’t need that YET”.  However, I quickly point out that I have never lost it or pushed the wrong button.  I use this is my example when talking about Universal Design concepts – why should we wait to use something that is more functional for us right now? Like many things it comes down to the stigma associated with having a [...]

What If We Started Using Baby Strollers for Balance Instead of Walkers?

The other day I was driving by someone taking their grandchild out for a stroll.  Shortly thereafter  I visited  an assisted living community with a large group of residents gathering with their “walkers”.   It occurred to me that the stroller has a more positive stigma in our culture, so what if we started re-purposing their use? Some thoughts on Age Segregation

Debra Conova writes “Younger people should be around older people and older people around younger people.” Since I have been writing and talking about this frequently, I feel that Debra captures the thoughts of the majority of the public.  It’s not to say that those moving to age segregated housing are not happy with their move. However, most people I talk [...]
