Nursing Home Quality Not Improving – Investigative Report USAToday
A recent USA Today report reveals that 560 of the nation’s nursing homes have not budged for the past three years from a one-star federal government rating — the lowest on a five-star scale. The star ratings are part of a broader federal effort to increase transparency for consumers of health care. When introduced in late 2008, nursing home industry groups called them simplistic and unfair. Some consumer advocates say nursing home quality can change quickly, and no ratings system [...]
Emergency Room Visits Can Bring Infection Back to Nursing Homes
An emergency department visit may triple the risk of respiratory and gastrointestinal infections for nursing home residents, researchers found. The rate of new acute respiratory or GI infections was 5% within a week of an emergency department visit compared with 2% when not leaving the long-term care facility, according to Caroline Quach, MD, of McGill University in Montreal, and colleagues. Quach’s study examined outcomes at 22 nursing homes in Ontario and Quebec during the months of September 2006 to May 2008 [...]

In addition, 77% of respondents said they would be delaying expansion and renovations as a result of the 11% Medicare reimbursement cut to skilled-nursing facilities that went into effect Oct. 1, according to the online survey of association members and [...]

Nursing Home industry is launching a multimillion-dollar ad to reduce budget cuts
Two industry groups are launching a TV ad campaign in eight states: Florida, Massachusetts, Michigan, Missouri, New Mexico, Nevada, Virginia and Washington. The Alliance for Quality Nursing Home Care and the American Health Care Association will also conduct a broader lobbying campaign beyond those states. The groups report that Medicare and Medicaid cuts have already hampered nursing homes’ ability to stay fully staffed and provide top-quality care. Further reductions “” including cuts from the deficit-cutting supercommittee “” would be devastating. [...]
Western Societies Views on Aging Can Be Negative
Wendy Lustbader, former social worker and author of a new book “Life Gets Better” maintains that youth, with all its insecurities and confusion, is more of a burden than the golden age society says it is, with aging far from a gloomy decline. She illustrates this somewhat unusual view with a elders telling a group of fellow travelers on a tour bus, most of whom were young, that they shouldn’t worry because “these are the worst years of your lives.” [...]
Retirement Community Prices May Turn Up
Rental rates at high-end senior housing complexes firmed up last quarter. While results vary by market, the industry is encouraged by signs of stronger senior demand for housing units. Valuations of entire housing complexes also have been rising, supporting the view that weak conditions finally may be giving way to growth and, eventually, the addition of more new units. Since the housing bust began several years ago, many prospective residents of retirement communities have been unable to sell their homes. [...]

Some thoughts on Age Segregation
I just stumbled on a letter to the editor in the Kansas City Star titled Fewer ‘geezer-ville’ communities needed. Debra Conova writes “Younger people should be around older people and older people around younger people.” Since I have been writing and talking about this frequently, I feel that Debra captures the thoughts of the majority of the public. It’s not to say that those moving to age segregated housing are not happy with their move. However, most people I talk [...]
