Time to enroll in Grandparents University!
I recieved a note today from Mary Braz, the coordinator for Grandparents University at West Chester University (WCU) in Pennsylvania. Mary reminded me that it has been a year since I wrote about Grandparents Universities. While college kids are returning from their spring break and planning for final exams, a growing number of Grandparents University programs across the country are gearing up to recruit students to campus! Last year was the first year of for the program at WCU, Mary writes “We had a very successful year last year, [...]
How Gay Elders Can Help Change Eldercare ““ Part II
Last week we had the screenings and discussions of GenSilent the award-winning documentary that documents issues and discrimination around Gay Elders. The film was very well done, and at points I had a pit in my stomach listening to the emotional stories depicted in the film. Good Care for Gay Elders = Good Care for Everyone One of the individuals featured in the film had moved to several nursing homes, finally settling on one that enabled he and his partner [...]

Drum Circles in Retirement Communities
If you thought activities in senior living communities are limited to Bingo and Bridge, then you have not met Alan Yellowitz. Alan facilitates drum circles in a rapidly growing number of retirement, assisted and nursing centers in the Washington, D.C. Metro region. Alan’s story is all too common; in 2009 he was downsized from his job in the information technology field. After spending considerable time and energy looking for similar work, he started to think about changing his career path [...]
Innovative Retirement Community or Publicity Stunt?
I frequently receive announcements about new senior housing projects. Last week one caught my eye that was hard to ignore. The $250M project called BOOM is planned for development in Palm Springs. The initial designs look like something from Abu Dhabi or the Museum of Contemporary Art! Originally the project was conceived as an LGBT retirement community, it has evolved to include residents both straight and gay, young and old. . See our previous posts on Gay Elders LGBT. I [...]
How Gay Elders Can Help Change The World
On Monday I attended a fantastic session of the DC Senior Resource Group (DCSRG).DCSRG is a monthly networking and educational meeting for professionals serving elders and their families that is coordinated by Elder Law Attorney Robert Bullock and other volunteers. I was pleased to see that this topic packed the house and broke all previous attendance records for DCSRG. The panel presentation The Senior Gay and Lesbian: Don’t Ask, Please Tell was moderated and organized by Sandy Douglass, CEO/Administrator of [...]
A Great Opportunity Connect Old and Young
I want to share a wonderful story and hopefully inspire you to think about making connections that span the ages and abilities. I recently visited my friends Kathy and Tim Websters home and commented on some beautiful contemporary art in their family room. The Websters have four children and the art definitely looked a cut above childrens art. Kathy was an art major, so I guessed that it was her creation. It turns out that the entire family created the [...]
GenSilent – Gay Elders Go Back to the Closet
One of the best things about writing a blog is once you put something out in cyberspace there are tons of people providing feedback and adding to resources. I was thrilled to learn about this documentary film titled GenSilent that focuses on the challenges that gay elders are facing in senior living settings. I am excited that our campus dialogue with Dorothy presents a easy to implement solution. Take a look at the trailer: In addition, I found [...]
Connecting a Gay Retirement Community Resident with College Students
Last Friday I had the honor to be part of a dialogue between Dorothy Roseman, an 87 year old gay resident of a Retirement Community in Philadelphia, and five student leaders at University of Pennsylvania’s LGBT Center. The conversation was emotional at times and illustrated that a powerful opportunity exists for the generations to really help each other. On the heels of recent press coverage about Tyler Clementi’s suicide and stories of gay elders returning to the “closet” when they [...]
I want to live where there are “trick or treaters”
Several years ago I received a call from one of our readers. She and her husband had been to dozens of retirement communities and her comment to me was “I like all of these places, but at the end of the day I want to live in a neighborhood with trick or treaters”. They ended up building a new home in their existing neighborhood that embraced Universal Design concepts, click here to read the article. Seeing the jack-o-lanterns on everyones [...]
