MetLife Mature Market Institute Profiles Age Segments

Posted by Steve Gurney Mon, 22 Feb 2010 01:37:00 GMT

A series of publications from the MetLife Mature Market Institute provide a history of the generations born since the early 1900s. There are almost as many members of Gen Y (born 1977-1994) in the U.S. in comparison to the largest group, the Baby Boomers. Younger Baby Boomers, those 45-50, have the highest average income. All groups spend most of their money on housing and transportation.

The youngest, Gen Y, say they are the healthiest; they are also projected to live the longest. The fastest growing sub-group is the over 85 group who number six million, including 99,000 centenarians. They have also seen the most change as some were born before cars, central heat, and refrigerators were ubiquitous.

The Copper Ridge Model of Care was developed over the last 15 years with the clinical team of Copper Ridge, located in Sykesville, in conjunction with The Copper Ridge Institute, affiliated with the Johns Hopkins University School of Medicine.  The Copper Ridge Model of Care not only applies, but advances knowledge in the care and treatment of dementia.

This model of care serves as a resource to medical professionals, families, caregivers, and the community at large.  With the addition of The Copper Ridge Model of Care, William Hill Manor will now serve as an all encompassing resource to those on the Eastern Shore affected by memory impairment.

Specialized design, architectural and staffing details of The Gardens contribute to a unique environment for those with memory loss.  The Gardens is staffed by a registered nurse 24 hours a day and dementia care education and training is provided for every staff member.

In addition to offering permanent residential care, respite care and short-stay evaluations are also available for those with memory loss.  Short-Stay evaluations will be offered beginning May 1st and will consist of a 14-day comprehensive evaluation by a team of experts including a geriatric psychiatrist, as well as caregiver training to help meet needs and allow clients to remain in their home longer.

Support Groups and Education are also offered by the Requard Community Nurse Educator, who is involved with several programs on the Eastern Shore which help patients receive care that is focused on the best available treatments, and provides education and support to caregivers.  Professional education is also offered through a Grand Rounds Program, which allows Eastern Shore professionals to understand this specialized dementia treatment program at William Hill Manor and provides education regarding treatment and management of those with memory impairment.

The Samuel and Alexia Bratton Memory Clinic is an onsite Outpatient Assessment Clinic will begin to accept new clients on May 1st, and will serve clients by providing an accurate diagnosis using the latest diagnostic advances by a team consisting of a geriatric psychiatrist, social workers, and nurses.  Dr. Allan Anderson will serve as the Medical Director of The Samuel and Alexia Bratton Memory Clinic.

Rockville, Md. – As we age, our needs change, and connections to friends and community change, too. To promote connectedness, four Jewish agencies (the Jewish Community Center of Greater Washington, Jewish Social Service Agency, Premier Homecare and the Jewish Council for the Aging) created Coming of Age in Maryland, a new program that brings recreation and social work together in a unique way. Every month exercise, lunch and entertainment at the Rockville JCC, trips to restaurants, museums and theaters, and high quality lectures at nearby venues are offered. A professional social worker is available as a free resource at each event.  Funding is provided by the State of Maryland, the Jewish Federation and the United Jewish Endowment Fund. To be added to the monthly mailing list or for more information, please call 301-348-3832. Additional information is also available on the JCC’s website, www.jccgw.org or by calling Beth Shapiro, the program social worker, directly at 301-816-2665.

People on the Move - Thomas F. Lansdale, III, M.D. has joined Ivory House as its new Medical Director.

Posted by Steve Gurney Mon, 22 Feb 2010 01:32:00 GMT

Dr. Lansdale is a board certified internist in private practice with an office located on the Greater Baltimore Medical Center campus (GBMC). Dr. Lansdale graduated cum laude from Harvard College with a BA in American history and literature, was an honors medical student at Case Western Reserve University School of Medicine, and completed his residency training in Internal Medicine at the Hospital of the University of Pennsylvania. Dr. Lansdale has served on the faculties of the University of Pennsylvania School of Medicine, Harvard Medical School, and the Johns Hopkins University School of Medicine. From 1996-2005, he was the Chairman of the Department of Medicine at GBMC. He was also Director of the GMBC Internal Medicine Residency Program and chaired numerous hospital committees.

Dr. Lansdale views his association with Ivory House Health Services as an extension of his interest in geriatric medicine and commitment to providing a high quality of care for his older patients. “I have always enjoyed the privilege of learning the life stories of all my patients, but especially those of my older patients. I believe strongly that nearly all of my older patients wish to stay safely and comfortably in their homes, supported when necessary by caring, professional health services personnel. In large measure, my most important job is trying to prevent my patients from having to be hospitalized. My affiliation with Ivory House Health Services gives me the opportunity to have a broader influence in assuring quality care management for seniors in the Baltimore Region.

“We at Ivory House Health Services are delighted that Dr. Lansdale has decided to join us. We are dedicated to providing our clients with the highest possible quality of care and believe that our clinical skills will only be enhanced by having a physician of Dr. Lansdale’s caliber and experience working with us,” said Hazel Kuchinsky, President of Ivory House Health Services.
